A Lesson on Emotional Intelligence
You’ve heard of IQ, now get ready for its gracious counterpart, EQ (or Emotional Intelligence). EQ can be defined as: the capacity to be aware of, control, and express one’s emotions, and to handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically [1]. In other words, sit down, be humble, and you’ll go far.
Having a high EQ is almost as, if not more important than having a high IQ. In the business world, emotional intelligence separates top achievers from the rest of the pack. In your personal life, it contributes in a major way to your health, to your happiness, and to the quality of your relationships [2].
Let’s break it down:
[3]
Believe it or not, this set of skills is the single most important factor in your success. In fact, it can even be measured! The link between emotional intelligence and earnings is so direct that every point increase in emotional intelligence adds $1,300 [approx. $1,700 AUD] to an annual salary [4]. Cha Ching!
Understandably, acknowledging that you aren’t emotionally equipped is a hard to swallow pill. But the reality of it is that everyone’s a little emotionally stunted, there’s always room for improvement. Emotions are a tool to achieving success – by widening your perspective, you can go a long way.
